The Senate approved the Latin script reform

On 10 September 2026 the Senate of the Oliy Majlis approved the reform of the Uzbek Latin script. Four signs changed; everything else stayed put.

What changed

  • oʻ becomes ö
  • gʻ becomes ğ
  • sh becomes ş
  • ch becomes ç

ng no longer counts as a separate letter, but the text does not change because of it: singil and keng are spelled exactly as before. The alphabet used to have 26 letters and 3 digraphs; it now has 28 letters plus the tutuq belgisi ʼ.

What is already settled

The law names a single date — 2031, for school textbooks.

What is not settled

The transition schedule will live in the Cabinet of Ministers programme, which is still being drafted. The revised spelling rules have not been published either — so the fate of the separator in words like Isʼhoq is still an open question.

What this means in practice

For the next few years the country will use three scripts side by side: old Latin, new Latin and Cyrillic. Whichever one you wrote your document in, you will need it in another — and that will be daily work.

Our converter handles all three, and it never sends your text to a server.
