When it takes effect, and what the deadlines are

This page tracks something that is still moving, so the date it was last checked sits at the top. When something is announced, we update it.

What has happened so far

  • 7 July 2026 — the Legislative Chamber passed the bill and sent it to the Senate.
  • 10 September 2026 — the Senate approved it. The alphabet will have 28 letters and the tutuq belgisi.
  • Next step — the president's signature. The law takes effect after that.

Schools: here the dates are named

This is so far the only area where numbers have been said out loud. According to Azizbek Turdiev, deputy minister of preschool and school education:

  • From 2027, once the law is in force, first-grade textbooks are printed in the new alphabet in any case.
  • Between 2027 and 2031 every textbook is renewed — inside the ordinary reprint cycle.
  • No extra money is needed for it: the textbooks get reprinted anyway.
  • Once the law is in force, exams are held in the alphabet the law sets.

Everything else: the deadlines will be in the programme

Signs, indicators and decorative elements of buildings may be used until they physically wear out, or until deadlines set by the programme implementing the law. Documents already issued, the national currency and securities stay valid — we have a separate page on that.

The programme itself is still being written. Deadlines for publishers, state bodies, banks and information systems will be in it.

The orthography rules

The new edition of the orthography rules has not been published. Where the tutuq belgisi goes, how particular words are spelled and what the official collation order will be becomes clear then. We will update our tables as soon as it appears.

What you can do

There is no need to wait: you can write in the new alphabet today. That is what the converter and the keyboard pages are for.
