Do you have to replace your documents

The short answer is no, nothing has to be replaced in a hurry. Below is what has actually been announced, what is still open, and where to check it.

Where the law stands

The Legislative Chamber passed the alphabet bill on 7 July 2026 and the Senate approved it on 10 September. The law takes effect once the president signs it.

The full text is not yet in the national legislation database. So what follows is what official announcements said, not our own reading. Links at the end.

Passports, money and securities

To leave the rights of citizens and organisations intact, the law carries a separate provision: documents already issued, the national currency and securities remain valid. There is no queue to join.

The new letters will reach documents the ordinary way — when one expires or is replaced for its own reasons.

Signs and street indicators

Symbols of state bodies, shop signs, indicators carrying geographic names and individual decorative elements of buildings may be used until they physically wear out, or until deadlines set by the programme implementing the law.

So there is no demand to take a sign down tomorrow. That programme is still being written, and the deadlines will be in it.

What is not known yet

  • The implementation programme has not been published — sector deadlines will be there.
  • The new edition of the orthography rules has not been published. Until it is, questions about the tutuq belgisi and the spelling of particular words stay open.
  • No separate rules have been announced for forms, seals or information systems.

We update this page as news arrives — the date it was last checked is at the top.

What you can do

For now, nothing has to be done. If you want to see how your name or your organisation is written in the new alphabet, put it into the converter: the answer appears at once and the text goes nowhere.
